Seattle quintet Queensrÿche formed in 1980 and spent the next decade perfecting their artful power metal aesthetic, drawn from the wellspring of ornate '70s rocker, like Pink Floyd and Queen. The band put themselves on the mainstream map with the hallowed 1988 concept album Operation: Mindcrime and its 1990 follow-up, Empire, which became their most significant commercial smash, notching up over two million copies largely thanks to the deep impact of hit power ballad "Silent Lucidity." A grandiose fist-pumper, "Best I Can" opens Empire with an adrenalin shot of motivational energy, declaring to "be the the best I can" and fight in the face of adversity and physical disability. "A young man now in a private chair / I've seen the world through a bitter stare / But my dream is still alive," sings Geoff Tate in the song's opening verse, before doubling down on "make the best of what I have".
