Hoyt Axton spent the '60s and '70s building up a catalogue of country releases, from 1962 solo debut The Balladeer to "When the Morning Comes" with Linda Ronstadt – his only hit on the pop charts, which went to number 10 in 1974 – also penning hits notable hits for The Kingston Trio ("Greenback Dollar"), Steppenwolf ("Snowblind Friend," "The Pusher"), Three Dog Night ("Joy To The World," "Never Been To Spain"), and Ringo Starr ("The No No Song"). Released in 1974, "Boney Fingers" was the follow-up single to "When the Morning Comes" and gave him one of his biggest solo hits, peaking at number eight on the US Hot Country Songs chart. On this down-on-its-luck amble, the star berates his poor financial situation ("Yea! I've been broke as long as I remember") while hoping that "things'll get a little better, in the mornin". "Boney Fingers" was featured on Hoyt Axton's 1974 album Life Machine, which went to number 21 on the US Top Country Albums chart.
