Born in Providence, Rhode Island, US soul and R&B maestro Freddie Scott amassed a raft of Top 10 US pop hits in the 1960s, such as "Are You Lonely for Me," which shot to the top of the R&B chart in early 1967 and this one, "Hey Girl". Known for his passionate delivery and velvety soft voice, the soulful crooner perfectly nailed the feeling of heartache in his timeless classic "Hey Girl." The emotionally charged song, which was written by the songwriting powerhouse team of Gerry Goffin and Carole King and first recorded by Freddie Scott in 1963, peaked at number ten on both the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles and R&B charts. "Hey Girl" has been a magnet for cover artists over the years, with Donny Osmond releasing a version of the song in November 1971 that was certified gold by the RIAA the following year, and Billy Joel, who included a version on his 1997 album Greatest Hits Volume III.
