Chris Cornell uses the metaphor of the highway to assert his self-worth and self-reliance after feeling let down by others in this emotive epic. "I am not your rolling wheels / I am the highway," he sings, later adding: "I put millions of miles under my heels / And still too close / To you, I feel, yeah." "I Am the Highway" was originally released as the fourth single from Audioslave's 2002 debut album, which made it to number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2004, number 2 on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and number 3 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart. This acoustic version of the track emerged nearly ten years later on Chris Cornell's 2011 Songbook tour and subsequent album, captured live at Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Toronto and nestled alongside live versions of "Black Hole Sun" and many others. In 2019, "I Am the Highway's" lyrics and title took on a poignant new meaning when they became the name of the memorial concert staged in tribute to the late Chris Cornell, who died from suicide in 2017.
