"Hummingbird" is a poetic and poignant ballad that draws on the sweet loyalty of a hummingbird ("Oh, she's little and she loves me too much for words to say / When I see her in the morning sleeping / She's little and she loves me to my lucky day / Hummingbird, don't fly away"). "Hummingbird" was written by Don Robertson and released in 1955—the same year that Les Paul and Mary Ford reached number seven with their hit version—while multi-instrumentalist Leon Russell recorded the definitive version for his self-titled 1970 album. In 1970, legendary bluesman B.B. King poured his skills into the Leon Russell variant of the song for his eighteenth studio album Indianola Mississippi Seeds, which was released in October 1970 on ABC Records and in May 1989 on MCA Records. With producer Bill Szymczyk at the helm, the pair turned in one of the biggest and most acclaimed blues crossover albums ever made.
